Cursor, the AI-native code editor built by Anysphere, closed a $900 million funding round in June 2026, the company's largest single raise and the latest signal that capital is following AI coding agents as aggressively as it followed foundation model labs in 2025.

The round comes after a year in which Cursor went from a productivity tool that engineers grudgingly tried to a default IDE for many AI-fluent teams. Reports earlier this spring put Cursor's broader fundraising target above $2 billion at a valuation north of $50 billion, and the $900 million close is one piece of that arc rather than the full picture.

Cursor's pitch is straightforward: keep the editor surface familiar (it remains a VS Code fork) and put intelligence everywhere — multi-file edits, repository-wide chat, agentic tasks, background runs, and tight integration with the latest models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The product roadmap has skewed sharply toward longer-horizon "background agents" that take an issue and return a pull request.

The competitive backdrop has gotten sharper, not softer. Microsoft used Build 2026 this week to announce Project Polaris, its own model that will become the default backbone of GitHub Copilot in August. Anthropic's Claude Code and Google's Antigravity have both shipped major agent updates. For Cursor, the new capital underwrites the model-agnostic strategy: the editor that runs whatever model wins.

For investors, the bet is that the editor is the place where AI coding monetizes — closer to the developer, with stronger lock-in than a model API. Whether that thesis survives Polaris-default Copilot is the question the next 12 months will answer.
