Google Launches Gemini 3.5 Flash Globally as Default AI Mode at I/O 2026

Google has made Gemini 3.5 Flash generally available and rolled it out as the new default model powering AI Mode for users globally. The change, confirmed during Google I/O 2026, marks the first launch in a fresh Gemini family the company describes as combining frontier-level intelligence with action-taking capability.

Gemini 3.5 Flash is positioned as the workhorse model: fast enough for interactive search-style queries, capable enough to handle multi-step agentic tasks, and cheap enough to run at Google scale. By making it the default for AI Mode, Google is silently upgrading the model behind millions of everyday queries without forcing users to opt in.

The "action" angle is the most consequential shift. Google is leaning hard into agentic search experiences where the model not only answers a question but also drafts a response, books a reservation, opens a relevant tab, or hands off to another service. Gemini 3.5 Flash is the model Google is willing to expose by default for these flows, suggesting Google has a high bar for reliability and latency now baked in.

For developers, the model is broadly available through Google's APIs, with new tooling around tool-use, structured output and grounding. Google is also positioning the Flash tier as the natural fit for high-volume agent workloads where teams want frontier quality without paying frontier prices.

The announcement was part of a broader I/O 2026 push that included roughly 100 product updates across Search, Workspace, Android and Cloud. Among them, Search received the most prominent AI-related upgrades, including new agent surfaces that operate on the user's behalf within and beyond the Search box.

The competitive read is clear. With Anthropic raising at a near-trillion-dollar valuation this week and Nvidia framing PCs as agent platforms at COMPUTEX, Google's strategy is to keep the world's biggest distribution surface — Search — running on a model that is both fast and agentic by default. Gemini 3.5 Flash is the vehicle.
