Generalist AI, a San Francisco-based startup founded by former Google DeepMind engineers, has raised $400 million in funding to develop what it calls a universal robot foundation model. The company's flagship product, GEN-1, is designed to be a single AI model capable of controlling any robot hardware, regardless of form factor.

The approach contrasts with the current robotics landscape, where most AI models are trained for specific robot configurations. Generalist AI argues that a general-purpose foundation model can learn transferable physical reasoning that applies across different robotic platforms, similar to how large language models generalize across text tasks.

The round reflects growing investor interest in robotics AI, following recent raises by companies like Standard Bots ($200M) and the broader trend of applying foundation model techniques to physical-world problems. Generalist AI joins a competitive field that includes Google DeepMind's own robotics efforts, as well as startups like Rhoda AI and Physical Intelligence.

The company has not disclosed its valuation or lead investors, but the size of the raise positions it among the better-funded robotics AI startups globally.
