Prometheus, the AI startup where Jeff Bezos serves as co-CEO, announced on June 11 that it has raised $12 billion in Series B funding at a valuation of roughly $41 billion. The round was backed by JPMorgan, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, DST Global, and Arch Venture Partners, with Bezos himself participating after leading the company's earlier $6.2 billion Series A.

The San Francisco-based company, which also has teams in London and Zurich, is developing AI tools to help engineers design and manufacture physical products faster. Prometheus says its goal is to build what it calls an 'artificial general engineer' capable of tasks like designing jet engines and other complex physical systems.

Bezos described his involvement as a natural evolution from founding investor to hands-on leader. 'I became so impressed by what was happening and the potential that I decided I couldn't sit on the sidelines,' he said. It marks his first CEO role since stepping down from Amazon in 2021.

With roughly 150 employees, Prometheus is now one of the most highly valued AI startups globally. The raise underscores continued investor appetite for AI companies tackling hard engineering problems in the physical world, rather than purely digital applications.
